Rhodiola semenovii seeds, Asian Roseroot

Rhodiola semenovii belongs to the family of the Crassulaceae. It is also known as Roseroot and is a popular plant for rockeries.
It is native to Central Asia. There R. semenovii occurs also in cold and meager areas. R. semenovii can stand temperatures until minus 23°C.
R. semenovii is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches a height of 20 to 50 cm. The leaves are greenish- grayish and thick. They are simple, long and only few millimeters wide. R. semenovii has succulent leaves. It stores water in the leaves so that it can survive dry periods. The leaves alternate at the shoot.
The flowers stand in inflorescences at the end of the shoot. The single flowers stand in the leaf axilla. They are greenish- whitish or slightly reddish in color. The fruit is a follicle that contains several very small seeds (3 mm).

Cultivation:

The seeds have to be put in the fridge for 2 to 4 weeks before planting (stratification). After that treatment they can be put on to the substrate. R. semenovii is a light germinator. The seeds should only be slightly covered with soil that enough light reaches the seeds. Germination occurs at a temperature of 20°C after 3 to 4 weeks.
