Carica monoica, wild papaya or orange papaya seeds

Carica monoica belongs to the family of the Caricaceae. It is native to all regions of the tropical America. C. monoica is also known as orange papaya or wild papaya.
The orange papaya grows as a shrub or a tree and reaches a height of about 3 m. C. monoica has a bushy habitus in contrary to Carcica papaya that has only leaves at the end of the shoot.
The leaves are dark green, lobate with long petioles. The venation is light green and clearly visible in contrast to the dark green leave. The leaves of the orange papaya are glossy and stand opposite at the shoot.
The flower is inconsiderable, whitish to yellow and actinomorphic. They stand in the leaf axilla. C. monoica is monoecious meaning that there are male and female flowers on the same plant.
The fruits reach 8 cm in diameter and are eatable. They are first green and get orange when ripening. The fruits of the orange papaya have a short stalk and grow directly at the shoot. When the fruit is ripe it can be eaten out of the hand. The green fruit can be cooked like a vegetable. This is quite common in the Caribbean kitchen, although the unripe fruit has almost no taste.
In the pulp there are the seeds. The seeds look quite funny, having a thorny look. They are about 0,5 mm wide.

Cultivation
The seeds of C. monoica can be planted 1 cm deep into the substrate without any pretreatment. When the substrate is kept moist at a temperature of about 23°C then germination occurs after 2 to 4 weeks. The adult plant should be placed in the semi shade. C. monoica is not winter hardy.
