The 7 Pot Douglah Red, also called 7 Pod Douglah Red, is a member of the Capsicum chinense species. This pepper has its origins in the island of Trinidad where its hotness is legendary. The Island’s inhabitants widely believe that you only need one pod to adequately spice 7 pots full of stew. While not as widely distributed as other 7 Pot strains, the 7 Pot Douglah Red is fast gaining more interest and being cultivated more. The pods possess a signature wrinkly and bumpy surface. Unripe pods have a light green colour that slowly transitions to a bright red to signal the pod is ripening. The most outstanding attribute, however, is how much hot it is.
The 7 Pot Douglah Red can pack up between 900,000 to 1,800,000 Scoville heat units which makes it one of the hottest chilli peppers in the world. The 7 Pot Douglah Red has a fruity flavour that’s quickly accompanied by the pervading heat. The pepper also has a fairly thin skin which makes it ideal for drying. Once sufficiently dried the pepper is ground to a powder that can be used to make hot sauces and flavour meats. It takes between 90 to 110 days for the plant to mature and bear fruit at which point harvesting can be done. The 7 Pot Douglah Red is productive both in terms of the size of the pods and in their number. It, therefore, falls on the owner to facilitate a conducive environment for growth.
