Eucalyptus pauciflora, also called Eucalyptus phlebophylla or Eucalyptus submultiplinervis, is a small tree belonging to the family Myrtaceae. This plant species is known to the mainstream as White Sallee, Weeping gum or Snow gum. Eucalyptus pauciflora is indigenous to Australia where large concentrations of the plant are found in the lowland areas. The distribution of the Snow gum trees extends from Tasmania to Victoria, New South Wales all the way to Queensland. Eucalyptus pauciflora which qualifies both a big shrub and a small tree can grow to a height of 4 to 8 metres. The bark is smooth and has a colour that hovers between white and grey and occasionally red in some plants. The tree regularly sheds its bark in the form of thin strips. Spring and summer welcome the flowering period where white flowers blossom all over the tree. Eucalyptus pauciflora is an evergreen plant that is uniquely adapted to handle low temperatures that might affect the leaves. Snow gum is one of the hardiest species of eucalyptus in the world. One way it preserves its leaves is through bending its outermost branches in an outward trajectory. The downward turn ensures that snow which might otherwise accumulate falls to the ground sparing the leaves. The durability of the plant makes it an ideal ornamental plant for places that undergo harsh winter conditions. While the wood provided by the plant doesn’t have much commercial value due to its softness, it can still be used as firewood. The plant is also excellent at preventing soil erosion through its roots which hold the soils together. Eucalyptus pauciflora prefers soils that are either heavy clay or a mix of clay and loam soils. The soils should also be well drained and have low levels of acidity. The plant also enjoys plenty of sunshine.
