Naggydobossi is one of the varieties of Cucurbita maxima. It belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, genus Cucurbita and species Maxima. The subspecies are C. maxima subsp. The synonyms are Cucumis rapallito carrere, Cucumis zapallito Carriere and Cucurbita farina Mozz. Ex Naudin,

It is native to Hungary and was cultivated for food by the native people. It is among the oldest domesticated plants which have been used since 7500BC to 5000 BC. It is grown in temperate areas and tropics. The plant requires fertile and well-drained soil. It should be planted in a warm area where the sun is bright. It does not tolerate frost; therefore, should not be planted in winter. It takes two weeks to germinate and requires a temperature of more than 20 degrees Celsius. It is planted directly from May to June at a depth of 4cm and a spacing of 38 to 60 cm is required. It is normally harvested from August to September.

The fruit has a dark blue rind and has a round shape with a flat end. The fruit weighs 5 to 10kgs.it has a sweet flavour when cooked. The rind is bluish or greenish grey and measure 5 to 10kgs weight. It is also slightly ribbed. Has an orange coloured flesh. The colour of the flesh is orange. Have large, flat cream coloured seeds and a very sweet taste. They are harvested when the rind is hard and have a deep colour. They are stored in a cool and dry surface. The fruit can stay for seven months or more when stored properly. It is open pollinated. It is pollinated by insects but in the absence of insects, it can be pollinated manually by a person.

It is good for the health and wellbeing of a person. It can be steamed or cooked. It can be used for the preparation of sauces, soups, jams and pastry. Like other pumpkins, it can be used as cattle feed. Many people have gained a substantial income through the sale of squash.
