Ipomoea quamoclit cardinals is a herbaceous plant also known by other names like Cypress vine morning glory, Cardinal vine, Cypress vine, Cardinal creeper, Star glory, and Hummingbird vine. The plant synonyms include Convolvulus pennatus, Quamoclit pennata, Convolvulus pennatifolius and Quamoclit vulgaris. Ipomoea quamoclit cardinalis belongs to a family of Convolvulaceae and Ipomoea genus. The plant has its origin at the tropical regions of America but it has since been natured at various parts of the world’s tropics.

Ipomoea quamoclit cardinalis is a tender perennial twining vine which grows up to 3-10 feet tall. The leaves are 1-4 inches in length, lobate with 1-9 lobes alternating at the sides of the leaves giving the foliage a unique ferny appearance. Its flowers are 1-2 inches long and 1 inch in diameter, star shaped, tubular, and flaring and opens at the mouth into five pointed star which flowers come from early summer to fall. The flowers are one of the best source of nectar to hummingbirds and butterflies. The plant is mostly found in fences, walls and trellises.

Ipomoea quamoclit cardinalis is useful in a number of ways, for example, in both tropic and non-tropic areas the plant is widely used as a decorative plant and has been naturalized. The plant is also one of the best attractions to humming birds.
