Phalaris arundinacea seeds

Canarygrass or Phalaris arundinacea is a perennial grass which grows to a height of about 2m tall. It has synonym phalaris arudinacea var. picta L. Canarygrass. It grows in moist soils and can also adapt in wetlands. For this reason, the plant is always noticed on lakesides, ditches, moist grounds and marshes. Phalaris arundinacea grass is native to the United States and the northern parts of New England.

The stem of Canarygrass can get up to 1cm in thickness. The main blades often taper and are always 10-15cm in length and 1-2 cm in width. These blades are solid green or depending on the condition of the growing area can be green with white strips. Ligule of the plant is membranous. The panicles are from 8-20 cm in length. Panicles that are yet to mature are compact and are spike-like, but upon maturity, they open up. Phalaris arundinacea flowers from early June to August. The colour of inflorescence changes from green to purplish and to tan when the seeds mature. Sterile lemmas have small hairy scales. The plant can withstand the harsh dry weather but does well in wetlands. The grass is difficult to eradicate once it is established.

Phalaris arundinacea plant fertilises itself from its male to female organs. The pollination is aided by wind or cross-pollination. The pollen of the plant is however weak and sometimes do not enhance seed maturity. This results in two kinds of lemmas, fertile and sterile lemmas. The seed from the plant is dispersed passively.

Most farmers plant Phalaris arundinacea for ornamental purposes. The grass can be turned into pellets or bricks easily for burning biomass stations. Also, Phalaris arundinacea gives fibre that can be used in papermaking and pulp making processes. The plant is also mostly planted for forage or as hay. The leaves of the plant can be used to weave mats and hats. The plant can also be used in reed bed system to purify water and irrigation purposes with pollution control sewage effluent from the industries. The plant increases the soil organic matter and through this, it aids in limiting soil erosion. The running roots of Canarygrass form ground cover that cannot be penetrated. The grass attracts wildlife and is a good browse to some animals. The plant has several special features that approve to be used as an ornament by farmers like attractive flowers, attractive foliage suitable for dried flowers and more.
