Old German tomato is one of many cultivars of the species Lycopersicon esculentum, also known as Solanum lycopersicum. This heirloom variety is originally from Mennonite, Virginia in the USA. It was only after 1985 that the tomato was finally released for commercial cultivation. The distribution of the growing of Old German tomatoes currently extends beyond the USA to Mexico and several South American countries. In keeping with other members of the beefsteak variety, Old German tomatoes are large and heavy. Fruit can reach a mass of between 1.3 Kg and 1.8 Kg when mature.
The colour of the tomatoes is an unusual combination of red and yellow streaks. The shape of the fruit is slightly global but leaning heavily towards being oblong. The tomatoes have a sweet and fruity taste with minimal acidity. The added meaty and juicy aspect of the fruit also makes them ideal for an assortment of culinary options. One can use sliced fruit as filling for sandwiches and toppings for burgers. The fruit can also be diced and skewered on a kebab or used in preparing sauces and soups. In addition to being indeterminate, the Old German is not a high-yielding plant. The plant takes between 75 and 80 days to mature and sprout ripe fruit.
