Chocolate Habanero is one among many members of the Capsicum chinense species of pepper plants. Like all varieties of Habanero, this pepper is believed to have originated from the Amazon region before being introduced to Mexico and the United States. Chocolate Habanero is one of the most popular peppers in Mexico and large swaths of South America. Chocolate Habanero pods are 2 inches long which is longer than most Habanero pods. The pods are emerald green when unripe. The ripening process, however, slowly changes their colour to a dark brown at which point they can be harvested. Chocolate Habanero is hotter than most varieties of Habanero registering up to 570,000 Scoville heat units. One should expect a fruity sweetness along with a smoky flavour to accompany the heat. The intermingling of fruitiness and heat makes Chocolate Habanero suitable for making Salsas as well as Mexican mole sauce. Ideal weather conditions for the healthy growth of the plant include plenty of sunshine along with well-drained fertile soils that are slightly acidic. Each plant can yield between 50 and 60 fruit every six months given the Chocolate Habanero is perennial. It will take between 100 and 120 days for the plant to grow, mature and sprout fruit from the time it’s planted.
